Lip Enhancement and Lip Reduction (Cheiloplasty)
Introduction
Lip enhancement procedures can be used to modify the appearance of lips. They can increase or reduce the size, and re-define the lip area depending on individual patient requirements. These treatments provide a longer-lasting alternative to semi-permanent lip fillers such as hyaluronic acid. An alternate therapy to fillers and implants uses the fat transfer technique (Lipofilling) to enhance the lip area.
How are lips enhanced with the fat grafting technique?
Fat transfer using harvested fat cells is called Lipofilling. This procedure usually requires local anaesthesia. It increases fullness in the lips depending on the amount of fat that successfully grafts to the area. During surgery, fat is harvested, purified and then injected into the lips. Injecting fat into the lips creates a fuller shape, as well as increased definition. Lip enhancement with fat transfer provides outstanding cosmetic results. As lips have a high blood supply, this area responds particularly well to fat grafting.
What can be done to correct hypertrophic lips, or naturally large, thick lips?
Lip reduction surgery can correct the shape of excessively large lips. This procedure requires local anaesthesia. During surgery, the surgeon removes a portion of tissue from behind the lip, enabling the surgeon to conceal residual scarring.
